"Aerial View of Firefall Phenomenon"

Yosemite’s famed firefall phenomenon as seen from the air aboard a tiny Cessna 206 with the doors off. Witnessing Yosemite’s familiar granite icons from a whole new perspective was an experience not soon forgotten, and the beams of sunlight that hit the park's massive rock walls is just one reason why the Sierra Nevada is known as "the range of light".

"Doud Creek Calla Lily Sunset"

Photographing the calla lilies that grow along a small stretch of Doud Creek in Garrapata State Park in Big Sur is an incredible sight to behold. The best time to photograph them is when the sun is low to the horizon to the west, backlighting the luminous petals in contrasting warm and cool colors.

"Lupine Leaves, Yosemite National Park"

On a sunny spring afternoon, a dense clump of lupine groundcover in Yosemite National Park provided an immersive macro photography opportunity while using an umbrella to diffuse the bright sunlight. When I use my macro lens, I typically default to a shallow depth of field to bring a selected focal point into focus while blurring the background, but here, used a narrow aperture to accentuate the repeating patterns of these lupine leaves and bring them into focus throughout the frame.

"Cathedral Peaks Winter Monochrome"

A fond memory of the one wintery day I experienced in Yosemite Valley last year photographing my favorite rock formations in the park, Cathedral Peaks. I was certainly inspired by Ansel Adams when processing this image, attempting to convey the drama and grandeur he conveyed in his images with atmospheric conditions and nearly black skies. The dramatic mood of this image matches the feeling I held in my heart when witnessing this stunning scene.

"Wildflower Carpet, Amador County"

I returned to one of my favorite wildflower spots discovered last year, the black diamond of all wildflower hills in Amador County. This combination of poppy covered rolling hills, purple lupine, blue sky and native oak trees is a favorite of mine- a scene that is truly "California nostalgic".  Springtime conditions in Northern California are so short and fleeting, blink and you miss it!

"Pink Dogwood and Half Dome"

Visiting the dogwoods in Yosemite National Park every May is always such a treat, and this past year, I captured a composition I've been wanting to get for some time, of the park's singular pink dogwood tree overlooking Half Dome and Ahwahnee Meadow at sunrise-  a quintessential bright spring image.

"Neowise Comet Over South Tufa, Mono Lake"

The Neowise comet over the other-worldly tufa formations of Mono Lake was visible only for a brief few moments before disappearing in the brightening light of dawn. Up at 3am for this scene, I photographed late into the night and witnessing the historic Neowise comet was well worth the lack of sleep.

"Yolo County Gold"

An annual rite of passage for California Central Valley photographers like myself is photographing the sunflower fields in Yolo and Sacramento counties in July. Every year, the crops are rotated, so a favorite spot discovered one year, can be tall rows of corn or another crop the next. This year, I was out a little late in the season, but I found this vibrant field in Esparto, which had nice foothills in the background, a nice anomaly for the typical pancake flatness of the Central Valley.
